WHAT IS HUNA?
HUNA is
the Hawaiian word meaning "secret." It refers to the secret
inner teachings of the kaHUNA or priests
of Hawaii. KaHUNA means "the keeper
or transmitter of the secret." HUNA is
the name given to the body of research based on the inner teachings
of the kaHUNA as compiled by William
Tufts Brigham, Max Freedom Long, and many others.
HUNA
is not the religion of the Hawaiian people. The ancient
Hawaiians did not have a name for their religion because it was
their way of life. HUNA is a Western
understanding of some of the principles of the Hawaiian Way of
Life. Much of the ancient Hawaiian knowledge has been lost
but what has been saved is very precious and important for the
Earth.
From this body of research,
HUNA LIFE International, Inc. has adopted the spiritual principles
of ho'ola (healing), aloha
(spirit), 'ohana (family) and lokahi
(unity). We use the Hawaiian names to show honor and respect
to the Hawaiian people and to acknowledge their dedication
to the preservation of these principles over the centuries.
HUNA
can best be described as a spiritual way of life. It does
not conflict with any other teachings, religious beliefs, or spiritual
paths. In many cases, HUNA helps
to clarify and explain other precepts. You do not have to
renounce or give up any spiritual beliefs you now hold to practice
HUNA. Max Long believed that the
basic HUNA beliefs are those once practiced by all the people
of the very ancient world.
In addition to the four
principles listed above, HUNA is also
based on a psychological and spiritual understanding of the three
minds, consciousnesses or selves of the human being. In
understanding the gifts and talents of each self, you are
able to bring your life into alignment or lokahi
(unity) and make positive changes. Students of the HUNA
Way of Life do no harm to themselves, others or to the universe.
We strive to be of service to our fellow humans and to all other
life that exists with us on this planet. We practice healing through
prayer and forgiveness. Our goal is to live in lokahi
with the Divine Force.
The HUNA principles are
important to our modern time, not only because they offer a spiritual
practice based on the unity of mind, heart, spirit and body, but
because they actually work!
